Ever since I could write, one of my favorite pastimes was snuggling up in bed with a pen and journaling ideas (one that was pink and sparkly, of course), and summarizing the day’s events on paper. 

Although as a child these journal entries were fairly basic and sounded something like, “omg I can’t believe Mason has a crush on Sara”, as I grew older (and wiser), I began shifting my focus from simply addressing daily occurrences to actually reflecting on them. 

As I continued to foster this practice, I quickly realized what a powerful tool journaling really is. 

If done with intention and dedication, journaling can be instrumental in personal growth and self-reflection. 

When you really take the time to look inward and translate those thoughts and feelings into physical words, you experience immense positive changes in your life. 

Journaling, for example, has helped me navigate some of the most challenging moments of my life, from the loss of my grandmother to periods of intense anxiety and self-doubt.

And depending on your specific needs, there are a variety of methods and techniques that will aid you on your self-help journey, each with their own purpose and benefits.

Some forms of journaling, for example, are designed with the intent of helping you to release pent-up emotions, while others can help you cultivate a more positive mindset or set and achieve your goals and dreams.

Journal Your Goals 

Everyone has dreams. But how many people actually realize those dreams? 

In a society where life can be chaotic and the pressures of fitting in and adhering to the norms are highly valued, we often adopt the belief that our dreams are not “realistic”. 

Well I’m here to tell you that you can manifest anything you set your mind to! 

And a great place to start is journaling. 

Using writing as a technique to achieve your goals is a powerful tool for personal growth and development. 

And no, these goals don’t have to be grand or extraordinary. They can be as simple as starting your day with gratitude or drinking a glass of water every morning. 

Some of my personal goals have included getting outside everyday, eating more healthily and calling my family abroad more often. 

Just picture it. You wake up feeling rested after a great night of sleep and you’re ready to take on the day, but before you grab your morning coffee you take your favorite journal from your bedside table and jot down your goals for the day or week. 

As you write them down, you start to feel a sense of clarity and purpose. 

You’re not just blindly following the same patterns of your daily routine, but you’re actively working towards something that matters to you and brings value to your life. 

Now, the key to getting the most out of this technique is the daily practice. Journaling your goals every morning or night will allow you to track your progress over time and achieve growth at a faster pace. 

For example, in the past, when I’ve felt discouraged, looking at previous entries and seeing how far I’ve come gave me not only a new sense of hope, but also motivated me to keep working towards my dreams.

  3. Stay motivated: simply having a dream or goal in mind is nice, but if left there, will often amount to nothing. Writing your goals down allows you to physically see what you are trying to achieve, which will motivate you significantly more than if simply left in your imagination.

So, how do you get started? 

  1. Set aside time each day: the first thing you want to establish is what time works best for you to sit down and write. You are going to make this a daily habit so it’s important you set aside a time when this is possible. If you’re a morning person we suggest doing your writing then and the same if you’re more of a night owl.  
  2. Get a journal or notebook: the next step is, of course, getting a journal in your possession. Choose a journal that resonates with you and makes you excited about writing. It’s also a good idea to buy one that is easily accessible so you can journal whenever you are feeling inspired. If you own a computer or phone, an online journal is a great option. 
  3. Write down your goals: the next step is to open your new journal and actually write down your goals. It’s important to be as specific as possible when doing this and communicate in a way that implies you have already achieved your goals. This may, for example, look like, “I have received a promotion at work” instead of writing “I would like to be promoted”.  When you speak in such a manner you release that energy into the universe and manifest your dreams as a result. 
  4. Reflect on your progress: physically writing your goals is important, but reflecting on them and the progress you’ve made is equally as important. Each day, after you’ve completed your journal entry, take a few minutes to think about what you have already achieved and what steps you need to implement in order to continue moving toward your goals. 
  5. Take action: Once you’ve written down your goals, it’s time to take action and bring them to life. As you begin implementing them into your life, use your journal regularly to not only motivate you and hold you accountable (we all need a little reminder sometimes), but also as a tool for writing down the necessary steps required to achieve your goals.

Daily Logging

Have you ever felt like you’re living your life on autopilot, going through daily existence without really being present? 

In today’s busy society, that can easily happen. 

For me, it was always the constant worrying about the future that prevented me from really enjoying the present moment. 

Fortunately, with the combination of meditation and journaling, I was able to overcome this and learn to live life day by day. 

But it’s not just any type of journaling, there’s a specific technique that will aid you the most in this situation- and that is daily log journaling. 

So, what is daily log journaling exactly? 

Essentially, it’s a practice of writing down your daily activities and thoughts in a structured way. 

Think of it as a combination of a planner, a diary, and a to-do list all in one. 

By keeping a daily log journal, you can stay organized, focused, and aware of how you’re spending your time.

If you’re like me and find yourself lacking in mindfulness and intention, then I’d definitely recommend giving this journaling method a try.

  2. Enhanced mindfulness: As I mentioned previously, as a spiritual individual, it’s extremely important to me that I live my life presently and with awareness. When I started daily log journaling, it allowed me to be more mindful of how I was spending my time and upon reflection, establish what activities I valued and what activities weren’t serving me.

  1. Choose a format: Depending on your needs and preferences, there are a variety of different types of daily log journaling that you can choose from. For example, you may choose to use the bullet points or full journal entries. You’ll also want to decide whether you want a physical or online journal. I personally opted for a physical one as I’m more of a pen on paper type of person, but for convenience an online one would definitely be better.  
  2. Create a structure: Next you’re going to want to decide what approach you’re going to take. Some options include a daily to-do list, a gratitude list, or a reflection section. I find using my daily log journal for simple reminders or affirmations to be particularly beneficial. Repeating sentences like “I am enough” or “I am ready to receive what the universe has planned for me” is a great way to start your day. 
  3. Write daily: Getting started is one thing, but talking from experience, I can tell you that it’s the daily practice that will really have the greatest impact. Set aside a chunk of time everyday to write in your journal that works best for you to see the most positive long-term effect. Consistency is key as they say!

Gratitude Journaling

One of the greatest ways to appreciate life is by being grateful. 

In a world where we are constantly comparing our lives to others via social media, it can be easy to get discouraged and wish we had more. 

The truth is that most of us live extremely blessed and abundant lives and it just takes sitting down and physically writing down all those blessings to fully comprehend this. 

When I began gratitude journaling, my overall well-being and happiness improved profoundly. 

There is so much beauty in this world to be grateful for. 

If you’ve been feeling pessimistic lately, try out gratitude journaling and you’ll see what I’m talking about. 

And it can be as simple as being thankful for clean air and water, sunshine, cozy sheets, fresh fruit and loved ones. 

Here are a couple benefits you will experience if you engage in this practice: 

  1. Boosts Your Mood: Focusing on the things you are grateful for will inevitably make you a more positive person. If you do this on a regular basis, like me, you will see a change in your overall mood and make you feel more satisfied with your life. 
  2. Reduces Stress: As a person with a proclivity toward being anxious, stress and its effects are like second nature to me. Looking back, I can definitely say that a significant contributor to my stress was feeling discontent with my life. I had moved to Europe but wasn’t moving forward career wise. Once I began focusing on the positives in my life, like realizing that having the opportunity to live abroad at all was incredible itself, my mindset changed. My anxiety began to diminish and I was able to manage future challenges with greater ease.

  1. Set Aside Time: Like the previous techniques, when it comes to gratitude journaling you first need to find a time each day that works best for you. Whether it’s in the morning, after lunch or in the evening, make sure it’s a time when you can be alone to reflect most efficiently.

Get Specific: When I first started gratitude journaling, I tended to be more general and write statements like, “I am grateful for my family” and while this is great to begin with, over time, you should try and be more specific. For example, I began writing things like, “I am grateful for the time and memories I shared and created with my mom when she visited me in Madrid”. 

Problem-Solving Journaling 

We all face challenges in life and when this happens, finding the right solution can be tricky. 

Sometimes, the best steps to take aren’t clear and you’re left feeling stressed and discouraged. 

When this happens, I like to turn to problem-solving journaling. 

Problem-solving journaling is essentially what the name implies: writing down a particular obstacle and figuring out the different ways you can address and overcome it. 

It’s a powerful tool that has aided me in many conflicts in my life, such as how to resolve a conflict with a friend or overcome a setback at work. 

Here are some of the benefits of problem-solving journaling (in case you’re having a problem decision whether or not you should start problem-solving journaling):

  1. Clarifies Your Thoughts: when a conflict is simply on your mind, it can be challenging to see it clearly. This is why writing down your problem and viewing it from different angles can be so beneficial. For me, whenever I start writing about my issue, I immediately see it from a fresh perspective and can address it more efficiently. 
  2. Increases Creativity: problem-solving is a skill that takes time to develop- no wonder our teachers were always throwing these types of exercises at us! When you engage in problem solving journaling, you are working on this skill and improving your ability to think critically. It forces you to explore different outcomes, which will inevitably make you more innovative and creative. I’ve gotten so good at it that when my friends or family have a problem, they come to me for help! 

Here’s how you can get started:

  1. Define the Problem: as you may have guessed, the first step requires you to actually identify the problem at hand. You’ll want to add as much detail as possible in order to solve it most effectively. 
  2. Brainstorm Solutions: once you know what obstacle you are trying to overcome, the next step is to come up with as many solutions as possible. Regardless of how crazy the solution may seem, write it down. At this point, you want to simply get as many ideas on paper as possible. 
  3. Evaluate Your Ideas: once you have exhausted all of the possible solutions, it’s time to consider each one. I highly recommend writing a pros and cons list for each, to make your final decision more easy. Having empathy and considering how your actions may impact those around you, is also advisable (if you believe in energies like me, showing compassion will also bring good karma back to you).
  4. Take Action: once you’ve identified which idea is most suitable, it’s time to put it into action! But before you hurry into it, learn from my mistakes and approach it with ease. Take the time to write down how exactly you will implement your solution and with appropriate timeframes (be realistic- remember, the turtle won the race not the rabbit!).

Journaling For Stress

Stress is something we all deal with- especially in areas where “hustle culture” is promoted. 

I used to be a person who got stressed easily. 

High school was particularly bad for me, as I placed too much pressure on my grades and ended up having breakdowns when I got anything less than 95%.

Of course, I now realize how trivial that was and a tool that helped me adopt this attitude is journaling. 

When I begin to feel stressed, I sit down and begin writing down my thoughts, feelings and experiences related to the source of stress. 

By doing so, I am able to gain a deeper understanding of my stress triggers and through this, develop effective coping strategies to manage them.

  1. Set Aside Time: Like the previous techniques, when it comes to journaling for stress, you first need to find a time each day that works best for you. Whether it’s in the morning, after lunch or in the evening, make sure it’s a time when you can be alone to reflect most efficiently.

Write Freely: when you’re feeling stressed, the best thing you can do is simply get out everything that’s bothering you onto paper without worrying about minute details like spelling (this can sometimes be challenging for me as I can be a bit of a grammar freak). Writing freely will allow you to uncover insights more quickly and without any judgment. 
  3. Focus on the Positive: Although the central idea behind this type of journaling is stress, when you’re trying to overcome stress, it’s important to try and shift your focus to more positive aspects of your life. I, for example, will write a list of things I am grateful for. This then allows me to tackle my stress with a more optimistic mindset (this is particularly beneficial when my source of stress stems from feeling like I haven’t achieved enough for the age I am). 
  4. Reflect on Solutions: the most obvious way to address stress is to find a solution to overcome it. Write some possible ideas down in your journal to cope with your stress and then take action towards the one that resonates with you the most (make sure your coping mechanism is healthy and productive- as tempting as the bar may seem at this time, it’s only a short-term solution).

Reflective End-Of-The-Day Journaling 

I don’t know about you, but at the end of each day I love to reflect on what happened that day. 

Whether it was good or bad, writing down my thoughts and feelings allows me to be more present and aware as well as gain a better understanding of myself.

Here are some of the benefits of reflective end of the day journaling:

  1. Reduces Stress: we all have bad days, and when this happens we can be left feeling defeated and discouraged at the end of the day. If you find yourself in this situation, it’s time to pick up a pen and journal and get writing! Translating your concerns from the day’s events will help you to process them and take away their power over you. 
  2. Promotes Self-Awareness: when you analyze each day (on a regular basis) you will start to notice certain patterns and habits in your life. This will ultimately make you more aware of yourself and recurrent behaviors, thoughts and feelings.

  1. Set Aside Time: the first thing you want to establish is what time works best for you to sit down and write during the evening. You are going to make this a daily habit so it’s important you set aside a time when this is possible. I like to write once all my work is done and my family is in bed so I have complete peace and quiet for my thoughts to flow freely. 
  2. Reflect on the Day: now it’s time to start reflecting and writing down events that happened during the day that resonated with you. Whether this is positive or negative, choose ones that you feel are most significant (which is obviously subjective. I mean, I can confidently say that the chocolate mousse I ate for dessert last night was definitely the best part of my day, hehe). 
  3. Explore Your Thoughts and Feelings: once you’ve identified the various events, explore how they made you feel. The chocolate mousse, for example, made me feel grateful for dessert!! (in moderation, of course). See if there are any common threads you notice happening each day (repeating feelings or thoughts) 
  4. Set Goals: to get the most out of this technique, use your reflections as a way to set goals for yourself. When I think of the chocolate mousse, I may set a goal to practice my baking skills (I may also set an intention to control my sugar cravings better in the future). Make sure to create a plan as to how you will achieve those goals! 

Stream Of Consciousness Journaling 

Stream of consciousness journaling is a unique and powerful form of writing that can help you tap into your innermost thoughts and feelings. 

This practice involves writing down whatever comes to mind without any filter or censorship, allowing your thoughts to flow freely onto the page. 

By doing so, you can gain greater self-awareness, clarity, and insight into your life and inner world.

My favorite time to engage in stream of consciousness journaling is when my brain is overloaded with thoughts/concerns that I need to get out as fast as possible.
